MPDC, in partnership with Boston Children’s Hospital and the National Restaurant Association, is excited to open applications for the 4th cycle of Prep & Promise, our paid 12-week food service training program designed to prepare young adults for immediate employment in the food service industry.

Program Dates

February 4 – May 7, 2026

Program Highlights

Paid 12-week training using the National Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Ready curriculum

ServSafe Credential included

Sessions held Wednesdays & Thursdays, 2–4 PM at MPDC (184 Dudley St., Roxbury, MA); some sessions via Zoom

Hands-on training for roles in retail food service (Starbucks, Subway, Regina Pizza, and more), food prep, dishwashing, sanitation, and Food Service Assistant positions

Direct employment pathway with over 40 job openings across Boston Children’s Hospital locations in Boston, Waltham, Needham, Brighton, and additional satellite sites

Eligibility Requirements

We’re seeking applicants who are:

18–26 years old

Eager to work and able to demonstrate accountability

In possession of MA identification

Boston residents (proximity to Roxbury preferred)

Experienced in restaurant/food service/retail (helpful but not required)

Interested in working immediately after program completion

Available to work weekends

Open to part-time or full-time roles

About MPDC’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP): Our program provides underserved in-school youth, ages 14-19, with career internships, job readiness skills, and educational enrichment. Our SYEP is intended to provide early workforce experience for young people who might not otherwise have this opportunity while supporting them with completing academics and college readiness. We also provide organized workshops and learning experiences to develop young people’s leadership skills.

When: Summer 2023 (June — August)

Age Range: Youth ages 14 — 19

About Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Boston and Roxbury Flight Meetings: Civil Air Patrol provides leadership, training, educational resources and workshops, team-building activities and exercises, and flight lessons!

When: Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5:00 pm — 7:00 pm.

About VIP Initiative: MPDC has been the lead agency for the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC)-funded Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP), otherwise known as the “Village in Progress” program in the Orchard Gardens and Madison Park Village communities of Roxbury, since 2008. VIP includes intensive violence prevention and community capacity-building efforts undertaken by cross-sector neighborhood coalitions.

About Block Captain position: Selected applicants will receive paid training, have opportunities to work directly with VIP, plan as well as coordinate VIP-related events, and complete other tasks as assigned.

MPDC’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP)

SYEP serves youth who are primarily Boston residents ages 14-19 for 7 weeks during the summer and places them into meaningful, paid internship positions across Boston.

MPDC’s successful leadership and job training programs offer opportunities for young people to experience the world of work while attaining skills and knowledge to help prepare them for future meaningful employment.

We employ over 75 young people each year. They work alongside our staff and our partner agencies to learn the “hard” and “soft” skills necessary to succeed in the workforce. MPDC staff members serve as mentors, challenging the young employees to pursue higher education, vocational training, union apprenticeship, and other opportunities as the best routes to long-term financial stability.
