The Boston Police Department recently expanded its community-policing effort, hosting a HUB Situation Table training to address the city’s most vulnerable populations. In collaboration with the Madison Park Community Development Corporation and The Dewitt Center, the training involved 100 participants, aimed at forging a more unified approach to crisis intervention.

Participants in the training hailed from an array of local enforcement and service organizations. According to an announcement by the BPD, individuals included officers from Boston and Massachusetts State Police, members from intervention teams, various service offices, and personnel from Boston Public Schools and other civic agencies. A blend of state departments and non-profit service providers, ranging from health care facilities to faith-based groups, also participated, learning about the HUB model and the confidential ‘4 Filter Process’.

Originally launched back in 2018, the HUB Initiative operates based on a simple, yet crucial principle: intervene quickly to prevent harm. The training, having addressed 696 cases thus far, targets individuals or families at acutely elevated risk, connecting them to services designed to mitigate imminent dangers within 48 hours. “The HUB does not perform case management,” the BPD clarified, emphasizing the rapid response nature of the initiative. Madison Park CDC received thanks for leading the Roxbury Hub, and recognition went out to the Boston Public Schools and trainers from Chelsea Police and Operation to Save Lives for their roles in fostering the program.

Black Lives Matter has partnered with several community voices to bring to Boston another CurbFest: For Political Prisoners. The Boston CurbFest is set to happen November 5th, from 1 PM – 5 PM at the Dewitt Center, located at 122 Dewitt Drive, Roxbury, MA 02116.

The Boston CurbFest unpacks complex stories about those locked away for their involvement in liberation movements, featuring a DJ, local performers, resources, self-defense clinics, and artists, with talks from Sekou Odinga, Poet Laureate Tongo Eisen-Martin, those who have since been exonerated from wrongful convictions, veteran Black Panthers and Lupe Fiasco. While there will be music, and even a youth corner, attendees will be encouraged to embody self-determination by working collaboratively to normalize the prevention of violence, and wrongful imprisonment, through community organizing, and exchanging resources and useful information.

The mission of this event is to develop the conversation around intergenerational liberation work and abolition within our localities and to redefine what healthy, safe, self-determined communities can look like when people work together to utilize strategy and political education. From musical performances to self-defense clinics, to thought-provoking words of revolution and triumph, Black Lives Matter Boston is committed to holding space for communities to come together, to
honor and share historical knowledge on the impacts, risks, and rewards of Political Prisoners’ fights in the Black Liberation and Freedom Movements.

At the DeWitt Center in Roxbury, elections warden Marie Bowden-Lockhart said many voters are coming out early to make sure their votes are accounted for.
“Their fear, from what they’ve been seeing on the television and reading in the newspapers, I think has motivated them to come out,” she said. “They want to make sure that… their vote is counted. That’s that’s the main thing for most people.”
Ethel Duncan of Roxbury, a retired MBTA conductor who voted at the DeWitt Center, said she doesn’t have confidence in voting by mail.
“I believe in voting in-person, because if there’s something going on in the Post Office, we’ll never know. You know, maybe [my vote] falls on the floor, gets swept up in trash. But now I know I put it in the [ballot] box.”

For her newest novel, “Lalani of the Distant Sea,” Erin Entrada Kelly turned to her Filipino ancestry to craft a mythic tale of a young girl on an epic journey. The best-selling author won the Newbery Medal for “Hello Universe,” which is being adapted by Netflix for a movie. She will speak at noon Sunday, Oct. 20 at the Dewitt Center Gym as part of the annual Boston Book Festival.

BOOKS: What are you reading currently?

KELLY: I have been going through a historical true crime phase. I was just on a plane and listened to “An Unspeakable Crime: The Prosecution and Persecution of Leo Frank” by Elaine Marie Alphin. He was a Jewish man who ran a pencil factory in Atlanta and was accused of a murdering a 13-year-old who worked for him. Before that I was listening to “The Trial of Lizzie Borden” by Cara Robertson. For some reason my audio books are very, very dark, and I fall asleep listening to them.

BOOKS: Do they ever give you bad dreams?

KELLY: For a while I was into the Russian Revolution so was lulled to sleep by sounds of that. One night I had the worst nightmare. So I decided to change gears. I started listening to Michelle Obama’s “Becoming.” Then I fell asleep and dreamt that she and I were great friends.

BOOKS: Do you have a favorite from your Russian Revolution reading phase?

KELLY: “The Family Romanov,” by Candace Fleming. I didn’t realize it at the time but it’s intended as YA. It was so accessible. What turns a lot of people away from historical nonfiction is that it can be so dense. I will learn more if I read books with specific angles into history. A book on World War II would be difficult for me to get through, but I just read “Blitzed” by Norman Ohler, which is about drug abuse in the Nazi regime. Through that one slice I learned about the war overall.

Mattapan resident Theresa Porter spent decades working for the US Postal Service, ascending to a management position in which she oversaw 245 employees in Houston, Texas. But two years after retiring, the 64-year-old Porter said she wants to return to work,

“I would just like a job. Something to do,” Porter said. “I’m tired of sitting at home, doing nothing.”

On Saturday, nearly 50 older workers plotted the next chapter of their working lives in the gym at the Dewitt Center in Roxbury during a city-sponsored workshop to help people age 50 and older find their next job.

“We’re hoping that we can actually get older adults connected with interviews and job opportunities,” said Emily Shea, who leads the city’s Age Strong Commission.
