MADISON PARK DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION RECEIVES COLLABORATIVE WORKSPACES PROGRAM GRANT TO SUPPORT BLACK MARKET IN NUBIAN SQUARE
ROXBURY, MA. – Madison Park Development Corporation (MPDC) is proud to receive an award of $80,000 as part of the Baker-Polito Administration’s Collaborative Workspace Program. The sixth round of the Collaborative Workspace Program, administered by MassDevelopment, aims to accelerate business formation, job creation, and entrepreneurial activity in communities by supporting infrastructure that fuels locally-based innovation. The awarded funds are designated to support MPDC’s collaboration with Black Market to strengthen community-based innovation and entrepreneurship.
Black Market is a Black-owned micro-business accelerator located at 2136 Washington St. in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood in a building owned by MPDC. The grant funds will be used to fund key building envelope improvements that will ensure that the space can continue to be fully utilized by Black Market which supports artisans and entrepreneurs of color facing barriers to business success by providing them space to create art, display and vend their products, hold meetings, and participate in capacity-building trainings and workshops.
“Black Market is grateful for the opportunity to continue its work to provide a collaborative workspace for the Nubian Square Commercial District in Roxbury through this partnership with MassDevelopment and Madison Park. This work is critical to closing the gaps for founders of Color, Women, and other underserved businesses,” said Kai Grant, Founder & Owner of Black Market.
“Across the Commonwealth, collaborative workspaces such as makerspaces, artist spaces, shared kitchens, and more, have breathed new life into downtown buildings and created room for innovation and entrepreneurship,” said Lt. Governor Karyn Polito.
Since its inception in the fall of 2014, and through FY2021, the Collaborative Workspace Program has provided more than $9.8 million in 164 awards for the planning, development, and build-out of different types of collaborative workspaces. Through the first five rounds of the program, collaborative workspaces have added 10,106 users since implementing their grant-funded projects and occupy approximately 1,013,593 square feet in cities and towns across Massachusetts. Many awards have benefited innovation spaces in Gateway Cities.

BOSTON–NEI General Contracting, Inc, in conjunction with local community partners, announced the grand opening of the Workforce Opportunity Resource Center (WORC²).

Designed to engage local community-based businesses and workers in the construction industry, particularly those underrepresented in the market, WORC² will offer “one-stop shopping” resources and technical support to promote worker development, business capacity building, and growth in the local construction community. Through education and information sharing, WORC² will also endeavor to remove the systemic barriers workers face when trying to access the industry.

“If you listen to the kinds of programs being offered here, they’re exactly the kinds of things that would make a big difference if you were a small contractor looking to become a bigger contractor and compete effectively on construction jobs in the public and private sector. This program overtime will give folks who normally don’t have access to mentoring opportunities the ability to be much better at what they do. And by getting much better at what they do, become more successful at what they do,” said Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker.

WORC² will be home to an extensive curriculum of professional and industry-specific training sessions, seminars, webinars, and mentorships. Offering a variety of learning opportunities for subcontractors and workers as well as structured business development paths, courses will focus on developing and expanding the project management, back office, and accounting capabilities of contractors.

All information will be presented in multiple languages to better engage the local community. “The space you stand in today is a project years in the making, developed both out of our mission for affordable housing construction projects to offer upward mobility and opportunity to those less fortunate, and the desperate need for resources to help MBE subcontractors grow their businesses, build capacity, and expand their market,” said Andre Barbour, Diversity and Inclusion Director at NEI General Contracting. “Today, we are we are happy to be open and ready to serve the community of Boston.”

At Hibernian Hall in Roxbury Wednesday night, acting Mayor Kim Janey closed out her historic tenure as Boston’s 55th mayor and as the first woman and person of color to lead the city.

To a room packed with supporters, government officials and press, Janey reflected on her time in office and the ongoing challenges facing Boston. She spoke to the coronavirus pandemic and her efforts to distribute the vaccine, her efforts to increase housing stability, her commitment to public art and culture through her “joy agenda”, her work on public safety and even her controversial approach to the ongoing joint drug and public health crisis on Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard.

“Addressing the challenges of our city takes courage and commitment because these issues can only be solved when we all work together to create systemic change. From managing a public health crisis to confronting institutional racism, we have achieved historic milestones together,” Janey said.

A farewell event for Acting Mayor Kim Janey was held at Hibernian Hall in Roxbury on November 10, where she delivered a farewell address and reflected on her service to the City of Boston as its first woman and first Black mayor.

WCVB’s Karen Ward Holmes hosted, and performances were given by singers Nia Ashleigh, Danny Rivera, and Dana Whiteside, who sang the National Anthem. Rev. Willie Bodrick delivered the invocation.

In her address, Janey spoke about how the city worked together during the pandemic and rolled out vaccines in every community, as well as enacted mask mandates and ensured homeowners, renters, and business owners were provided with resources.

“To protect the most vulnerable of our residents, particularly people within the immigrant community, we supported asylum-seekers and invested in work-readiness opportunities for Dreamers,” Janey said in her prepared remarks.

She also spoke of the JOY Agenda, which she said was created “as a strategy to heal from trauma” and brought things like public art and dace parties to neighborhoods.

She talked about Boston’s observance of Juneteenth as a holiday for the first time, as well as declaring Indigenous Peoples’ Day in the city.

“While ensuring stability in a time of crisis was a top priority, I also led Boston towards the more equitable and just city we all deserve,” Janey said.

The Boston Home Center’s first-time homebuyer program was expanded, as was down payment assistance.

“Crime is down and at its lowest in five years,” Janey said, and “we must continue to address trauma, which is often the root cause of violence.”

Janey also spoke of green jobs and equitable transportation, notably her pilot for free bus service on the route 28 bus which travels through Mattapan, Dorchester, and Roxbury. The Supplier Diversity Program also now includes LGBTQ+ owned businesses.

Acting Mayor Kim Janey — Boston’s first woman and first Black resident to serve in the top post — bid farewell to the office Wednesday, ticking off a series of accomplishments during her brief tenure, including helping the city navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite holding the office for less than a year, Janey marked a dramatic pivot in the city’s long history — a history she found herself thrust into as an 11-year-old when she was bused to a largely white neighborhood during the second phase of Boston’s tumultuous school desegregation era. Rocks and racial slurs were hurled at her bus.

Her rise to the mayor’s office, however brief, reflected a changing city where people of color now make up a majority of the population.

Until Janey, only white men had served as mayor.

“When I was sworn in, following former Mayor (Marty) Walsh’s confirmation as U.S. labor secretary, we were in the midst of a global pandemic and a national reckoning on racial injustice,” Janey said during the address. “It was a time of uncertainty in our country, but Boston stayed strong.”

Janey officially steps down on Tuesday, transferring power to incoming mayor-elect and fellow Democrat Michelle Wu.
