The plan: sell the family’s ornate antique piano carved by an enslaved ancestor and use it to buy the land where his ancestors were enslaved. But half of the piano also belongs to Berniece\, who refuses to let her brother pawn off the heirloom. Inspired by the theme RHYTHM\, BLO opera singers will perform fan-favorite arias from Europe and the Americas intertwined with sets by Boston’s beloved Afro-Latin percussionist Cornell Coley and members of his ensemble. The event will culminate in a community dance party led by the traditional West African dancers of the Akwaaba Ensemble. Bring a chair or blanket to settle on the grass\, or listen in while enjoying the park’s playground\, chess tables\, and basketball courts.    \nThis program is free and is recommended for audiences of all ages. In the wake of the police killing of George Floyd\, Americans of all backgrounds joined together in historic demonstrations in the streets\, discussions in the workplace\, and conversations at home about the financial gaps that remain between white and Black Americans. This deeply investigated book follows the lives of seven Black Americans of different economic levels\, ages and professions during the three years following this period of racial reckoning. \nDrawing on intimate interviews with these individuals—three of whom are well known and four of whom most readers will learn about for the first time in the book—the authors bring data\, research and history to life. Fifteen Cents on the Dollar shows the scores of set-backs that have held the Black-white wealth gap in place—from enslavement to redlining to banking discrimination—and ultimately\, the set-backs that occurred in the mid-2020s as the push for racial equity became a polarized political debate. \nFifteen Cents on the Dollar is a comprehensive\, deeply human look at Black-white wealth-gap history\, told through the lives Black Americans as well as through the development of a new bank intended to help close the Black-white wealth gap. Louise and Ebony jointly teach an MBA class on racial wealth gaps at The Yale School of Management. \n  \n \nAbout the authors/moderators\nLouise and Ebony jointly teach an MBA class on racial wealth gaps at The Yale School of Management.\nLouise Story\nLouise is a prize-winning investigative journalist who spent more than 15 years at the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal\, where she was the top masthead editor running coverage strategy. Her work investigating corruption led to the largest kleptocracy forfeiture in U.S. history\, a scandal known as the 1MDB case. Her work during the 2008 financial crisis led to a multi-billion dollar settlement in the derivative market and to Goldman Sachs’s S.E.C. settlement. Projects she led have received honors including Emmy Awards\, Pulitzer Prize finalist citations\, and Online News Association awards. Louise’s film “The Kleptocrats” aired on the BBC\, Apple and Amazon. She teaches about racial wealth gaps at The Yale School of Management. \nEbony Reed\nEbony began her career as a reporter at The Plain Dealer\, covering Cleveland public schools\, documenting public education’s inequities\, with her work recognized by The Investigative Reporters & Editors organization. At the Detroit News\, she managed the local coverage during the 2008 economic crisis. Now the Chief Strategy Officer at The Marshall Project\, she has held other senior roles at the Associated Press\, Boston Business Journal\, and The Wall Street Journal. She’s taught at more than a half dozen institutions\, including The Yale \nSchool of Management\, where she co-teaches with Louise.
